We booked an overnight hard sleeper train from a tour operator for 470,000d each from Hanoi to Cai Lao.
*Later we found out that you can book these seats a lot cheaper from the train station.
We got a taxi to the station for 50,000d, the driver tried charging us 100,000d but the meter stated 46,000d so we stood our ground and paid 50,000d.
The train departed at 8:30pm and all six of us had a cabin to ourselves with a door that locked. The beds we had reserved were hard but you can book soft beds for a slightly higher price. We each had our own sheet, blanket and pillow, i used my blanket underneath and my own blanket on top for added comfort.

The train arrived on time at 5am and we were approached by various mini bus drivers asking us if we wanted to go to Sapa. All were charging the same price and we each paid $3 for the 1 hour drive to Sapa.
